Promote Reading Comprehension, Fluency and Vocabulary in Grade 3 and Grade 5

Summary
In this article, the
researchers use 8 weeks in summer. First, the researchers give the students who
are in grade 3 and grade 5 a test to see their reading ability. After that,
they are given some book related to their interests and their reading levels.
Besides, they are monitored by their parents during the summer. The parents are
trained to apply the six reading comprehension strategies like making
predictions and connections, asking questions, rereading passages that cause
difficulty, retelling, and summarizing. The result is that they get
improvements in reading comprehension and also their vocabulary mastery.
Application
This parents-role
monitoring maybe cannot easily implemented in my class because the Indonesian
culture that parents maybe in their duties or maybe they are sill in an
uneducated condition, but it is still possible that the parents may encourage
their children to finish one book in a break period. Also, it is still
possible to do any peer-reading between the students in school.
