Summary
This article talks about using
authentic materials for extensive reading to promote English proficiency. In
this research, Guo was going to know whether doing extensive reading of
materials have an effect on vocabulary gain, on improvement of grammar, and on
other language skills or not. This research done by a language proficiency test
and an attitude survey. The result of the language proficiency test is that the
use of authentic materials for extensive reading has positive effects on
students language acquisition, on vocabulary and other skills. It also has
significant improvement of vocabulary acquisition, but not grammar. In
addition, it improve students’ knowledge, material for communication, and other
language skills. The students are also become more involved in class discussion
although there are some which are still lack of motivation to ask questions. The
attitudinal survey describes the use of authentic materials for extensive
reading brings positive effects. The result is that students felt that authentic
reading were relevant to their lives, increase their understanding, improve
their vocabulary, give them more materials to be discuss, increase their
knowledge, and motivate them to continue for further reading.
Application
Students are usually more motivated when they are faced to the new materials. In this case, authentic materials can bring them to life that can bring some interests and motivation to them.
